Thursday Notes – August 20, 2009

Don’t forget!  Today is Day 2 of the Official Operation Beautiful Charity Necklacke Drive.  The benefiting charity is Dress for Success, which helps women in need feel confident and beautiful when they are searching for jobs. Leave more about the charity here, and purchase the beautiful necklace here!  It makes a great gift!  And come back later today for an interview with a woman who has benefited from Dress for Success.

Here’s a story that was FOUND by the right woman at the right time… Sami wrote, “I was in Barnes & Noble tonight, and I picked up a book. It was titled “Women who Hurt Themselves”. I’ve just recently started hurting myself because sometimes it’s the only way I know how to handle the pain. That, and the fact that I experience a lot of self hatred everyday.   Anyway, when I opened the cover, there was a little green post it note that said “You are perfect just the way you are. Don’t forget it! =)”  Even though it could’ve been meant for anyone, I feel like I found that note at just the right time. Whoever left it, I thank them with all my heart. Words can’t express how deeply grateful I am that I stumbled across this little piece of paper.   I think I’ll start leaving “You are beautiful” notes around town. It’s a wonderful thing that you all are doing. Thank you for making people feel beautiful!”

Apasmara posted this note on a park bench:

Mikey posted these notes around the store:

Diane wrote, “This e-mail is something I did as a kind of Operation Beautiful as I have a chronic illness and don’t leave the house much.   Hopefully some of my friends around Australia will get on board and spread post-its throughout Sydney and Melbourne:”

To all my sisters on this Earth I have adapted this for you.
It used to be a chain letter, now the choice is yours without guilt or superstition.

Dear God by all your names and forms;

The lady reading this is beautiful, classy, strong and I love her.

Help her live her life to the fullest.
Please promote her and cause her to excel above her expectations.
Help her shine in the darkest places where it seems impossible to love.

Help her to believe that she is more than enough just as she is.
Protect her at all times, lift her up when she needs you the most,

And let her know when she walks with the love of Spirit in her heart, she will always be safe.
Thank you and Amen.

If you choose to forward this on something wonderful will happen, you will have let some beautiful women know their worth! There is no limit to how many people you can send it to, or how long you take to send it.   If you want more ideas on how to help women feel beautiful, empowered and loved, visit:  Operation Beautiful!

Grace wrote, “I believe this is such an inspirational crusade.  Although I haven’t yet started, I’m writing up notes for school tomorrow. This means that your crusade will have reached 13 year olds to 17 year olds in Australia.  I gave this one to my teacher:”

Kristen wrote, “So far, I’ve only posted notes inside, but now that I’m walking to work, I decided to put one outside. I noticed a lamp post with a bunch of ads on it and figured that if they people selling services thought people looked there, I might as well try a note there. So, on my way home from work today, I posted this note.”

Nikki wrote, “I came across your Operation Beautiful site a couple days ago and since then have been hooked on the idea.  I immediately prepped a bunch of pre-written  post-its with “Beautiful type” sayings on them to post around town (Edmonton and/or Sherwood Park, Alberta).  This is my first one!  I was meeting a friend for dinner after work today and had a few moments to
kill…I decided to use this time to do one of my favorite things- browse
around the bookstore! (and, of course, use the washroom- where I posted this

Anne from Blue Plate Special wrote, “It was so exciting to post a note. I felt so covert!  I posted them in BJ’s (a warehouse-style bulk grocery store) when I was doing some pre-4th of July shopping.   But for the second note, I decided to do something different.  I think some men out there could use a little inspiration to help them love themselves and their bodies too, so I posted this note on a display of Men’s Health Magazine… “

Samantha posted this note in a SCUBA dive shop in GUAM! She wrote, “This morning throngs of people were hanging out at the MDA dive shop for their 2x/year massive sale. After snagging my new equipment, I snuck into the bathroom and left this one on the mirror. Hopefully the staff left it up and all the great guys and gals in and out of there today will see it!”

Posted in a bathroom in England:

Kristen from Inspired by Dooce posted this note in her work’s elevator:

Joelle from Joely Go Lightly wrote, ” Here’s the note I left today on the mirror of the ladies’ room bathroom in a movie theater near my house in Las Vegas, NV.”

Judy wrote, “Here are a few pictures of some more notes that will be distributed at my dance class tonight.  If anyone needs to see and hear this message, it is the teenage girls taking dance/ballet classes, being told they aren’t thin enough to be a ballerina, etc… We are powerful and can empower many people!!!”

Ryan from Chasing Daylight wrote, “I was just at USF doing some things for grad school and posted my note in the bookstore bathroom. The USF mascot is the Bull so that’s included in the note!  I really loved walking out of the bathroom feeling slightly mischeivous as another lady walked in!”

Emily from Keep on Keeping On… wrote, “I posted this note on the back of a bathroom stall door at my work!”

Amy wrote, “I posted this yesterday – my first post – in the work bathroom.”

Angie wrote, “I decided to put up some signs at the office today in the women’s bathrooms.   I’ve done 3 signs:   “Think of all the beauty that’s still left in and around you and be happy“;  “SMILE! You are exactly as beautiful as you wish yourself to be“; and a quote from Salma Hayek: “People often say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder; and I say that the most liberating thing about beauty is realizing that you are the beholder. This empowers us to find beauty in places where others have not dared to look, including inside!”

Thursday Notes – July 2, 2009

A message from Caitlin:  If you want to participate in Operation Beautiful, post a note, take a picture, and send it to!  Spread the love! XOXO

Kelly wrote, “Here is a picture of a post-it that I stuck next to the mirror (it wouldn’t stay on the mirror) at a grocery store in Idaho!”

Donna wrote, “Let me tell you I found the web site on a day when I was truly searching for something to just get me through another Monday. Just feeling blue, struggling with weight loss, and dating nightmares. In the past 3 months I’ve had 3 guys discontinue dating me or I had to call it off with them over the state of my body….. But each experience makes me reach down inside a little bit deeper and just come back stronger and more resolved to love myself and take care of myself first.   Today I posted 10 of these little inspiring post-its all around the company where I work. I put some on vending machines and others in bathrooms. I felt like an impish fairy!”

Jen from Recipes for Creativity wrote, “I am hoping some girl will see these notes and realize she’s just as beautiful as that air brushed model!”

Jenn wrote, “I now work at a hotel as a server/bartender and even though it’s very convenient and pleasant most of the time, sometimes it can be a negative and draining environment (whether it’s coworkers or guests).”  She posted this note in both English and Spanish so all of her coworkers can read it!

Suzy and her boyfriend, Louk, posted two notes.  The first note went on a gas pump and it reads: “If you can dream it, you can do it” – Walt Disney. Remember that! YOU CAN DO IT!!!”

The second note reads: See yourself as a soul with a body, rather than a body with a soul!”

Mizfit posted this note:

AJ from AJ Loves to Lose wrote, “Such a great idea—here is the note put up in my office women’s bathroom—hope it sparks more women thinking about inner beauty!”

Andrea posted this lovely graphic all over to help spread the message of Operation Beautiful:

Jess from What’s Normal, Anyway? wrote in to say: “I just wanted to let you know that my Mom called me last night to let me know that the note I posted in the ladies bathroom at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church and Student Center in Gainesville, FL was still up after a week and 1/2! And what’s better is a group of new undergrads were talking about it!”

Mel from Ladies Fitness Corner posted these notes all around GERMANY!

Colleen wrote back to say, “OMG, OMG, OMG!  I went in the restroom just now (here at work) and someone had put a post-it up in the stall that said “You are beautiful!” It’s catching on!! “

Kalie wrote, “I have been suffering from an eating disorder the last three years.  I have been in and out of out-patient therapy the past couple years.  I am still struggling with body image and bulimia.  The last two days have been the best for me since I can remember.  “Operation Beautiful” has helped me so much.  In fact, I just was having anxiety about my dinner I ate.  My urge to binge and purge was strong, but I pulled out a mirror I made yesterday and got through it.  I bought a cheap full length mirror and used a permanent marker to write down all the negative stuff that I didn’t like about myself.  Then, next to the negative I wrote the opposite or positive.  Like for example, “cellulite on my legs – these two legs helped me run 13 miles.  “I’m still taking it one day at a time, but I never realized the power of telling YOURSELF that you are beautiful and perfect just the way you are.  I’m not the size of my jeans, or the tone of my body. “

Liz posted these gems in a library book and in a bathroom:

The second note reads: Honor Yourself!

Katie wrote, “Today I went to the mall with my pad of sticky notes. I went through the whole mall and the parking lot full of cars. At each store I put notes saying, “Your beautiful just the way you are with the clothes you have on!” or “Your beautiful and don’t let anyone tell you different!” etc. Well going back through the mall to buy my friend a gift I heard people saying they didn’t need to buy new clothes or they just smiled. No matter what they did it was worth the hours of work. I’m glad I could make a difference!”

Wednesday Notes – July 1, 2009

A Message from Caitlin:  Hello, Orlando Sentinel readers!  If you’re new to Operation Beautiful, be sure to watch the quick YouTube video, which explains the purpose behind the mission!

Lexis from Sweet Tooth wrote, “Thank you for starting this mission, it is amazing and I am enjoying contributing!!”

Debbie wrote, “Posted in the women’s room in my office building, Northern Virginia”

Mizfit posted these notes around town with her daughter’s help:

Keya wrote, “I didn’t put this in a place where all could see, but for one important person – my supervisor! She’s been going through some things and I sometimes don’t know how to encourage her, so when I received an email that directed me to your site, I thought it would be perfect for her. The funny thing is, she didn’t come to work today. I put it on her screen, thinking she would see it tomorrow, I took two quick pictures of it on her monitor (so that’s why they’re not the best!), and AS I was sitting back down at my desk, she walked in! She barely missed me! It’s hard to read, but it says, “I’ve been blessed with a beautiful person in my life. I’m talking about you! STAY BEAUTIFUL!”

June wrote, “I just wanted to tell you what my niece and I did one fall day.  We went out and collected a LOT of colored leaves and with gold and silver metallic markers we wrote a message on each leaf that said things like, You are beautiful, Don’t listen to noisy negatives, Live, Live, Live!!!, Life is a Banquet and Most poor suckers are starving to death, etc.  Anyway, we wrote hundreds of fun positive notes and quotes on leaves, took them up to the roof of my apartment building and let them loose on all sides.  It was so much fun as the days went by to see people finding the messages on the leaves and smiling.  IT was also a great fun activity and lesson for my niece.”

Amber wrote, “I posted two photos today at church.  One in the coed bathroom and one in the women’s bathroom.  To be gender neutral I put the “you are amazingly wonderful” one in the coed bathroom.  And then the other one in the women’s bathroom.  “God thinks you are beautiful just the way you are.  Love yourself!”  Both pictures came out very dark, but I think you can see the notes on the mirrors!  I FEEL amazingly wonderful now and I know God thinks I’m beautiful just the way I am.  He even thought so before I lost over 90 pounds!”

Dani from The Distracted Diva wrote, “I usually am quite self-conscious about my less-than-thin self, but today when I dressed for the gym, inspired by posts on your site, I decided that I didn’t want to wear a baggy t-shirt over my tank top. Instead, though it was much more form fitting and didn’t hide my caboose at all, I wore my tank tops w/o a baggy tshirt! I took a pic to share with the world! 😉  Also, as I was cleaning out my locker when I was done at the gym, I left a little note:”

Tabby from Tabbilicious wrote, “I posted it in the Family Christian Bookstore in Manassas, Virginia.  It says “You are made in God’s image and that makes you beautiful!”  It was such a rush to post it and then walk out and pretend like I didn’t do anything.  I hope that someone sees the note and checks out your website and more people begin posting notes around the area!  I know there will be more notes from me in the future!”

Nicole wrote, “I banged out my 15K yesterday for the first time to prepare myself for my upcoming race. At one point during the run I started feeling overwhelmed and like I wasn’t sure how much farther I’d be able to go. Just as I was feeling that way, I came along a turn on a bridge that read, in HUGE letters “SMILE!!!!! :)” written across the ground in pink chalk. This, of course, made me smile and gave me some extra UMPH. So I continued running and I happened to see this girl that I have already ran by twice. This time I decided to share the love (she was struggling, you could tell) so I shouted out, “You’re doing awesome!” and she looked at me crosseyed, but then she smiled and kept on going. I felt so much better after seeing that SMILE and passing it along made me feel even MORE awesome.”

Amina wrote, “Attached is a note I left on the mirror of a Starbucks bathroom in Silver Spring.”

Tuesday Notes – June 30, 2009

A Message from Caitlin:  Keep those notes coming!  The mission is spreading, and I’m getting more and more e-mails from people who find YOUR notes (with the web address written on the bottom) and tell me how much Operation Beautiful touched them.  Keep up the good work — YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!

Tiana wrote, “During the night, my sister and I took chalk and wrote “You’re Beautiful” all down the sidewalk on our street and on the cement ramp on our front lawn.  This morning, I glanced out the window to see a female jogger stop running to read the message. She smiled, looked up at the house and met my eyes, and continued jogging with a grin on her face.   It was so worth it.  I’m 15, my sister’s 13. We’ve never had more fun with sidewalk chalk than last night.”

The Oh She Glows Mom put this note up:

Kylie of the Ooh La La Lifestyle wrote, “I absolutely adore this movement.  I finally remembered to leave the house with my own post its and pink magic marker and I felt like a fairy godmother as I snuck my note on a post office drop-box.  I drove away in a fit of giggles and felt wonderful, glowing, and inspired.  my post-it notes are the new visa…I’ll never leave home without them!”

Carolyn from Sandy Feet Eats and Treats wrote, “Here is my own ‘operation beautiful’ note.  I actually posted it on my own bathroom mirror so it’s the first thing I see every day, to motivate me to keep a healthy balance in life!  I added “sunshine” to the note because it is what my mother always called me growing up (and still!) and I associate it with radiating positivity and cheerfulness, and i think it reminds me to embrace every day with a positive self-image and attitude.”

Kristen from Inspired by Dooce wrote, “In the last couple of days I’ve put up a few operation beautiful notes. I put one up in on the mirror of the bathroom at a pub. I know at least one person saw it before someone took it down…(I was drying my hands when a lady came out of the stall, washed her hands and read the note out loud. then she looked at me and said “imperfections….well, I have a few of those”…the note said “your imperfections are what make you beautiful” and i put the web address on it as well).”

Emily wrote, “Another note that I left in a porta potty at the Balloon Fest in Howell, Michigan. Thought it would brighten people’s crazy hot and hectic day!”

MizFit took her daughters on a note-posting SPREE and put up these gems on a car….

On the weights at the gym

In a locker…

If you find Operation Beautiful be empowering, be sure you participate, too!  Not only will you touch the women who find your note, but you’ll touch THOUSANDS of Internet readers! Post a note, take a picture, and send it to Caitlin at!
